In the next Olympic Games of Tokyo 2020, a total of 80 athletes will represent the world karate competing in Kata and Kumite, distributed in the following way:

  • 10 participants in Male Kata.
  • 10 participants in Female Kata.
  • Male Kumite, in three weight categories and 10 participants in each one.
  • Female Kumite, in three weight categories and 10 participants in each one.

As we can see, only ten karatekas would compete in each event, and to select these Olympic representatives, the WKF proposes that 4 of the 10 places be awarded based on the world Karate Federation ranking, another 3 in a qualifying tournament and the remaining 3 by criteria of universality and to guarantee the presence of all continents.

However, to qualify for this last way will be essential to be among the top 50 of the world Karate Federation ranking, a criteria that will also apply to those who choose to access the Olympic Games as champions of continental competitions.

To score in this ranking, you must participate in all possible tests of the world circuit, which are divided into:

  • World Championship, which will multiply by factor 12.
  • Premier League and continental championships, multiplied by factor 6.
  • Series A, multiplied by factor 3.

How we can see, The classification to be in Tokyo 2020 will be very complicated, but not impossible!

Sandra Sánchez is one of the firm candidates to be able to represent Spain in Tokyo 2020.
